Background

Shurelia was born in the Azim Steppe among her kind, the Au Ra, in a small community. Her mother and father were simple folk yet Shurelia was frowned upon by all others in their home for she was not like the rest of the Au Ra who lived there. While her mother and father were of the Xaela clan, Shurelia somehow was born of the Raen clan, her scales were as white as snow, as was her skin tone and even her hair. No one knew the cause of this as it had never happened before, but there were dark whispers about the snow-white Raen.
Eventually the elder spoke to Shurelia's mother and father, calling the child a curse upon their community and ordering her banishment. Her parents fought for their child but could not sway the mind of the elder. They too threatened to leave if their daughter were banished but this only served to anger the elder. As such Shurelia's parents were imprisoned and Shurelia was forced out of her home. She was placed on a boat and left to sail where the wind would take her, and it took her to the Black Shroud of Eorzea.
Once in the unforgiving forest Shurelia was given no time to rest for this forest was home to many savage creatures. The voidsent were no exceptions and they immediatly saw the child as nothing more than an easy snack to enjoy. She was attacked day and night and forced to travel the paths these horrible creatures dictated. Through the forest she was pushed and eventually into the cold snowy lands of Coerthas.
Deep in the freezing snow and horrible blizzards of Coerthas central highland Shurelia felt as though she would meet her end, and she very nearly did. She had come up against a horrible beast, a Behemoth, any attempts to flee were met with roars, sharp claws and sharper teeth. This is where Shurelia suffered her greatest injury, the savage beast slashed across the young girls face, catching only her left eye and forever blinding the young Raen, she truly believed this would be her grave, that she would perish in this cold wasteland.
With only seconds to spare an Ishgardian knight appeared as if by magic. He fought the great beast and saved Shurelia from almost certain death though initially the knight was unsure what to make of the young raen and despite the ongoing dragonsong war raging through Ishgard, he saw naught but a frightened child.
The knight chose to adopt Shurelia, taking her back to the Holy See with him. Many within questioned the knight but all were met with stern replies and sterner actions. Eventually the knight sought to question Shurelia about where she came from and the young Au Ra explained the circumstances of her current state and why she was in Coerthas at all.
The healers of Ishgard agreed to help Shurelia and though her vision on her left side was lost, they did all they could to heal the child. During this time the knight who saved Shurelia also informed others of her plight and why she was so far from her home in the first place. Though it made little sense the healers decided to delve deeper into the matter to try and find out the truth behind Shurelia's birth and why she was a Raen instead of a Xaela as she so claimed.
Upon examination of the young raen the healers and priests of the Holy See discovered that Shurelia's body was akin to a containment system for aether. She could naturally draw aether in and hold large quantities of it for later use, what those uses might be was still a mystery, but due to all the many elemental types of aether she had already accumulated over the years her entire body had turned almost completely white due to the culmination and mixture of all the different types of aether. Because the aether within her was being mixed so thoroughly, Shurelia's own aether had turned black, being completely devoid of elemental type and as raw as aether could be.

Though most take notice to the fact that Shurelia has two different coloured eyes, they think this to be a beautiful sight, however what they fail to realize is that her left eye is in fact just a small orb fashioned to look the part and otherwise serves no other function, thus rendering her blind on her left side.
Though usually hidden under the armor she wears, Shurelia always wears a red pendant, it doesnt seem like anything fancy or special, but oddly enough, the chain that holds the pendant between her breasts seems to vanish in her hair and does not actually go completely around her neck. This necklace holds a magical power that forces Shurelia to answer any question asked and prevents her from lying, though some would see this as a curse, it was in fact Shurelia herself who requested to have this necklace made and bound to her so she would never be tempted to lie, regardless of what consequences the truth might hold.
Apart from the magical necklace that adorns her neck, Shurelia also wears a beautiful choker with an exquisite purple materia laid into it's center. This was a gift she received from Seraphine, the mocha bunny. Though it was not the choker as a whole that she received, but the materia at it's center which was the gift. Initially the purple gem was given to Shurelia on a fine and delicate silver chain, and for fear of it breaking the young raen traveled to the goldsmiths guild in Ul'dah and commissioned their aid in making a choker with which to keep the gem safely around her neck, now she wears this piece of jewellery happily, showing off the gift she was given.Years later her wife once again surprised her, Seraphine hand crafted a very special chain necklace to keep the materia in. This was no ordinary alloy and the risk of loosing the gift that Shurelia received years ago was no longer an issue, now Shurelia wears not just the gift of the materia but the chain that Seraphine also prepared for her.
During her travels through Eorzea and beyond Shurelia and her friends had found many unique and interesting treasures, but one particular trinket stood out among the rest. Helia had come across a set of beautiful bracelets that almost perfectly matched the choker that Shurelia had gotten from the Goldsmiths Guild in Ul'dah. She knew she had to have it and also gave a set of the same bracelets to Shurelia as a lovely gift, now she adorns these bracelets with great pride and each time she looks down at the beautiful gems in the center she is reminded of the lovely woman who got them for her.

It took a bit more time than with others but eventually Shurelia spoke to Siona and managed to break the ice, she felt nervous around a woman she had viewed as her superior and thus tried to find ways to shine when the two were together, Shurelia by no means wished to surpass Siona, but instead felt like she wanted to become her equal. However in becoming friends she found that her skills would aid Shurelia in ways she could never repay, and instead would divulge her time in making sure the draqo'te would know she was appreciated and loved.

Shurelia met Helia after the forming of the Velvet Veils and back when she was a Hrothgar and a male, but during his adventures in Haukke Manor he was dealt a bad hand. One of the voidsent within those desolate halls managed to taint Helia to the point that his entire structure was changed to the female Lalafell form she now has, thus changing Helia from a 'he' into a 'she'. Though initially Helia saw this change as a curse and found her new form difficult to adjust to, Shurelia stood by her friend and gave her all the support she could. Regardless of the form, Helia's heart was untouched and she was still the friend Shurelia had made months prior, and eventually Helia was able to accept her new form without issue, though still learning of all it's uniqueness.

Shurelia met Minty through her wife Seraphine and quickly learned that this adorable lalafell was in fact Seraphine's younger sister. It was unclear how the two were related but Minty had a wild energy that almost mirrored Seraphine's, all condensed in a cute little package. Minty was just as high spirited and bubbly as her elder sister and quickly became a good friend of Shurelia. Later when she and Helia married Shurelia was given the honor of being their maid of honor at the wedding, truly a privilege she did not take lightly nor would ever forget.

Shurelia met Lidhja after the forming of the Velvet Veils free company and while they did nothing to actually interact, it was through sheer luck that their paths crossed. Their connection was a slow one and full of trials and tribulation, but eventually the company of one another proved joyful and their bond grew all the more.

An almost gothic Hyur woman that Shurelia met at The Bad End bar. Jay became enamoured with Shurelia almost instantly and offered her services as a submissive to the raen woman. 'Powerful' and 'Dangerous'. These are the two words Shurelia would use to describe the ability she possesses that is known as 'Arcane Arts'. Seemingly unknown even to Shurelia herself, it is an ability she simply has and can utilize, she was not taught it nor did she study or learn it. At a young age this ability began to manifest and Shurelia very quickly learned of it's destructive capabilities. Swearing to only use this power after she had learned control it Shurelia spent many years honing her skills and prepping herself so that if the day came in which she would use this power, it would be for the right reasons and furthermore that she could properly control it, not just for her own safety but for those around her.
